Samaritan Healthcare is a small, 50-bed hospital located in a rural community in the Washington’s Columbia Basin. The facility is essential to their community, but struggled to find and hire qualified candidates for a variety of positions from staff to leadership roles.
At GHS, we understand the challenges with recruitment at small, rural hospitals. Advertisements typically fail to pull the quantity and quality of candidates required. It’s equally difficult to fill high-volume staff positions and specialized, experienced leadership.
We took time to learn about the hospital and its distinctive community. It was a wonderful opportunity for the right candidate: the facility had recently undergone expansion and renovation, had a wonderful family atmosphere, and boasted a long-tenured group of employees on staff. They are located right on a scenic lake, with 300 days of sunshine a year and easy, relaxed commutes. We then identified the type of person that would fit the culture and enjoy the lifestyle of the area. When actively recruiting passive candidates that may not have even been aware of the Moses Lake or the hospital, we would paint a picture of the distinct benefits of working at a small, rural community hospital. It was an educational and informational approach, not a simple “help wanted” advertisement.Over a two year span, GHS was able to fill four key leadership roles and a number of staff positions for the hospital. Most importantly, we identified candidates that were the right cultural fit and are there for a long-term commitment.
